On June 26, 2024, the Russian company VK switched off ICQ. It was 27 years and seven months old, VK had counted about 11 million users on it as recently as 2022, and the notice announcing the end ran two sentences, the second of which pointed everyone at VK Messenger and VK WorkSpace. Four young Israelis at a startup called Mirabilis had released it in November 1996. AOL bought the company in 1998 for $287 million up front plus $120 million in performance payments, then sold it in 2010 for $187.5 million, which tells you most of what you need to know about the years in between.

Two years and three days later, on June 29, 2026, WhatsApp opened username reservations to its three-billion-odd users. Meta’s post explained the early sign-up by noting that at that scale “a lot of names overlap,” and pitched the feature with a parent who wants to join the soccer team’s group chat without handing a phone number to strangers. It even added an optional “username key” that people have to know before they can message you. AOL shipped a version of this in May 1997. It was called a screen name. ICQ had the key part too. It called it “authorization required.”

Everybody agrees on the story: the old messengers died because the new ones were better, and anyone who misses software that a stranger could crash from three states away needs to examine their life. Half of that is true. WhatsApp and Signal are better utilities by every measure that matters, and nobody wants buffer overflows back. But “better utility” isn’t the whole story of what disappeared. For about a decade there were four networks fighting over the same teenagers, a dozen clients reverse-engineering each other’s protocols, and an identity you invented yourself, usually at fourteen, usually badly. That mess produced a culture. A phone number produces a contact card.

Here is where we landed. Everyone you know is on WhatsApp. Everyone you’d rather not have on the record is on Signal. Both are keyed to your phone number, both were engineered by very serious people to be reliable and encrypted, and both have the warmth of a parking garage. Let me walk you through how we got here. Personality analysis is included at no extra charge.

ICQ Gave You a Number, and the Number Was Worth Stealing

ICQ launched on November 15, 1996. Four programmers in Tel Aviv wrote it in under two months with no money, the name was a phonetic “I seek you,” and the whole thing ran on a peer-to-peer design with a central server that existed mainly to tell you who was online. ICQ didn’t give you a name. It gave you a UIN, a user identification number, handed out in sequence, which meant the number told everyone roughly when you’d arrived. Five or six digits meant 1997. Nine digits meant you found out about it from a magazine.

That made ICQ the first messenger with a class system, and where there’s a class system there’s a market. Kaspersky’s researchers later documented a whole trade in “attractive” UINs: palindromes, repeated digits, numbers matching the owner’s mobile, sold by online shops that took custom orders and filled them, more often than not, through industrial-scale password guessing and outright account theft. The same shops sold plain nine-digit numbers in bulk to spammers. In 2004 a NamePros forum member reported picking up a six-digit number in exchange for a Gmail invitation. Both were currency that year.

The ICQ user, then, was an early adopter who kept score. They answered to a sound, the “uh oh” that announced every incoming message and still makes a certain kind of 45-year-old flinch in a quiet office. They understood that “Free For Chat” was the most emotionally exposed status a person could publish, so they sat on “N/A” and waited to be found anyway. They used Random Chat to talk to a stranger in Finland about nothing. The nickname was decoration and the number was the identity, which is why Windows Central’s story on the shutdown opened by asking readers whether they still remembered theirs. I do. I’m not telling you what it is. Some things are still private, and that’s what Signal is for.

ICQ had about 100 million registered users at its 2001 peak, and it lasted longest in Russia, which is how a startup from Israel ended up owned by a Russian internet company and switched off with a two-sentence notice. Call the type a collector. The collectible was a number, and some of the inventory had been stolen from whoever registered it first.

AIM Turned Teenagers Into Publishers

AOL launched AIM in May 1997, first as a feature inside the AOL client and then as a standalone program you could install without an AOL subscription, and it became the default American messenger almost immediately because every AOL subscriber was already on it. By 2001 AOL claimed more than 100 million registered users. If you were an American teenager with a landline and a dream, this was your social life from 3:15 p.m. until your mother needed the phone.

AIM’s great contribution to civilization was the away message. Officially it told people you’d stepped away from the keyboard. In practice it was a publishing platform with a built-in audience: song lyrics aimed at exactly one reader, class schedules, inside jokes, and the emotional weather of a sixteen-year-old who was very much not away. Naomi Baron, a linguist at American University, took the form seriously enough to co-author a study of how college students used away messages, and quotations turned out to be a staple ingredient. Twitter launched in 2006. AIM users had been posting short status updates to an opt-in follower list for the better part of a decade by then.

Parents worried all this typing would wreck their children’s English. Baron counted. At the 2005 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science she reported that 11,718 words of college students’ instant messages contained 31 abbreviations, most of them the letter k, along with 90 acronyms, mostly LOL, and 121 misspellings. The papers her students handed in had more.

So picture the AIM user: an American teenager running a personal media operation off the family computer and fighting a sibling for time on it. Screen names carried underscores and birth years. Buddy lists were sorted into groups (”Buddies,” “Family,” “Co-Workers”) plus one you made yourself whose name was never meant to be seen by the people in it. You “warned” people. You sat idle for 47 minutes on purpose so it looked like you had a life. A door creaked open when somebody signed on and slammed when they left, and the slam meant a human being had chosen sleep over you. When the creak was the right somebody, homework was over. And when nobody was on, you talked to SmarterChild, a bot, and you’d rather I didn’t bring that up. I’ll bring it up later.

One memorial to AIM put its finger on something. You knew when someone was online, when they signed off, and when they were “away” with a message that might or might not be about you, and that was precisely enough information to make everything feel high-stakes. Today’s apps tell you far too much or nothing at all. AIM got the dosage right by accident.

Verizon’s Oath unit, which had inherited AOL, announced the end in October 2017 under the headline “Our yellow running man is ready to retire.” The servers went dark on December 15, 2017. Buddy lists were deleted and there was no way to take one with you. One software engineer wrote a script to fire off messages at one-second intervals as midnight approached so he could claim the last message ever sent on AIM, which is the most AIM thing anyone has ever done.

Microsoft Downloaded AOL’s Ads and Threw Them Away

MSN Messenger Service launched on July 22, 1999, with a feature its own engineers assumed management would cut: it logged into AOL’s servers alongside Microsoft’s, so you could talk to your AIM buddies without running AIM. David Auerbach built that at 20, and in a 2014 essay for n+1 he described what followed as a daily contest. AOL would change something to catch the impostor. Auerbach would compare his client against the real one, match it again, and try to ship the fix the same day.

AOL got inventive. At one point it caught Microsoft’s client because it skipped a large block of advertising the genuine client downloaded, so Microsoft’s client started downloading AOL’s ads and throwing them away. Another block exempted connections from Microsoft’s own campus, which left the Messenger team staring at a working client while every customer got an error. One morning a message from AOL’s servers arrived with a note tucked inside. It read “HI. –MARK.”

Then AOL sent code. Its final blocking scheme exploited a buffer overflow in AOL’s own client, pushing a small piece of x86 down the wire to check whether the program on the other end was the real thing. Microsoft’s response was a leak. Security researcher Richard M. Smith received an email from a “Phil Bucking” of “Bucking Consulting,” supposedly an independent developer alarmed on behalf of AIM users. It had been sent through Yahoo Mail, which put the originating IP address in the headers, and the address traced back to a proxy server at Microsoft. Microsoft acknowledged Phil was an employee. AOL spokeswoman Tricia Primrose called the whole thing “a fake story about a fake e-mail about a fake issue.” The email was fake. The buffer overflow was real, and security researchers confirmed it.

Microsoft lost that round and then won the war everywhere except at home. In February 2006 comScore found MSN Messenger in use by 61 percent of the world’s instant messaging users, including more than 90 percent in Latin America and more than 70 percent in Europe and Asia Pacific. North America, where MSN, AIM and Yahoo each held somewhere between 27 and 37 percent, was the odd one out. By June 2009 Microsoft was reporting 330 million monthly active users.

So the MSN user lived outside America, signed in with a Hotmail address that had “baby,” “angel” or “sxc” in it, and treated the display name as a billboard. The display name was not a name. It was a weather report on your emotional state, updated hourly, usually in song lyrics. People typed lyrics into their name as a hint of their feelings, and if a crush was online but hadn’t started a chat, they logged off and back on to reappear at the top of the screen. Breakups were announced by lyric. So were reconciliations. Nobody’s parents understood why their child had renamed himself after a Fall Out Boy chorus.

MSN Messenger 7.0 brought the nudge in 2005, which physically shook the other person’s chat window, and Microsoft built in a delay between nudges to keep people from abusing it, which people did anyway. It was the first denial-of-service attack you could launch on someone you liked. The same release let you pick Appear Offline before you even signed in, which made the MSN user the first mass-market practitioner of strategic invisibility, openly used to dodge people you didn’t want to talk to. Then came winks, animated interruptions that took over the window, and custom emoticons, traded between friend groups until conversations were 40 percent cartoon cats. Third-party patches let you run two accounts at once, a feature the community called, with total sincerity, “polygamy.” “Who blocked me” websites finished off whatever friendships the emoticons hadn’t. Auerbach had also added the automatic smiley back in 2000; he says it was the first American chat program to turn a colon and a parenthesis into a face, and allows that the South Koreans may have beaten him to it. And the entire time, a single LimeWire song was transferring to a friend at four kilobytes a second.

Microsoft bought Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011, retired Messenger on April 8, 2013, and moved more than 100 million users over. China kept Messenger until October 31, 2014. The nudge did not survive the move. Nothing fun survives a Microsoft transition.

Yahoo Built a City and Never Hired Police

Yahoo Pager launched on March 9, 1998, and was renamed Yahoo Messenger in June 1999. By April 2006 comScore had it as the second-largest messenger in the world, with 76 million users. It had the BUZZ!!! that rattled your window, IMVironments that put cartoon backgrounds behind your conversation, audibles that let you blast voice clips of cartoon characters at people (Yahoo shipped this on purpose), webcam hosting (no further comment), and from 2006 the ability to talk to Windows Live Messenger users. None of that is what made Yahoo different. The chat rooms did.

AIM was for people you knew. Yahoo was for people you didn’t. You picked a category or a region and walked into a room of strangers typing over each other, at 2 a.m., in a place called Romance:1, and the rooms had permanent residents. There was the a/s/l guy, who opened every private conversation like a border agent; a 2001 Pew report found teenagers listed age/sex/location as the most common question thrown at anyone entering a chat room. There were the late-night regulars in the regional rooms who knew each other’s handles better than their neighbors’ names and treated the place like a bar where nobody has a face. There were the voice chatters who treated a desk microphone as a stage, the spambots working the door, and the booters.

A booter was a program that knocked you offline, or froze your Messenger until you killed it yourself, and the people who used them treated it as a sport. How they worked deserves more than a sentence, and gets a whole section further down. Yahoo Chat was a 24-hour bus-station food court and people loved it for exactly that reason.

The Yahoo user was an extrovert without a car. She had at least one friend in Alaska she’d never seen and never would. He had, at some point, accepted a webcam invite from a stranger and learned something about humanity. They wanted strangers, and that appetite is the one thing modern messaging has engineered out most completely, for reasons that are hard to argue with, and it was the engine of the whole scene.

The rooms had a darker population too. In June 2005, after Houston’s KPRC reported that adults were using user-created rooms to target children, and PepsiCo, Georgia-Pacific and State Farm pulled their advertising, Yahoo shut down every user-created room with no warning. Hundreds of harmless rooms went dark in the same sweep, including one a Houston man had run for eight years for film cast and crew. Yahoo kept its own rooms running until December 14, 2012, then closed public chat entirely and said it would find better ways to foster community on modern platforms. It didn’t.

Yahoo Messenger shut down on July 17, 2018, with a six-month window to download your chat history. Yahoo pointed users to an invite-only beta called Squirrel, which became Yahoo Together, which launched in October 2018 and was discontinued on April 4, 2019. By then the most successful messaging product ever built by Yahoo alumni had been running for nearly a decade. Jan Koum and Brian Acton, who spent a combined 20 years at Yahoo, called it WhatsApp.

Skype Was Where the Grown-Ups Went

Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis released Skype in August 2003 with a small team of engineers in Tallinn, Estonia. Ten thousand people downloaded it the first day and it had a million users within months, because it let you talk to another country for free at a time when that cost real money. It also produced the “Skype Mafia,” more than 30 Estonian founders who went on to build companies of their own. It was the first messenger a lot of parents installed on purpose.

The Skype user was the adult in the room. Long-distance couples. Grandparents who learned to use a webcam for exactly one reason. Job candidates in a pressed shirt above the desk and whatever they liked below it. A development team nine time zones away, and people calling family overseas on prepaid credit. Every Skype user knows the liturgy: “Can you hear me?” “Can you see me?” “You’re frozen.” “No, you’re frozen.” Their heart rate still climbs at the ringtone. It was not for fun. It was logistics with feelings, and that usefulness is why it was the last of the big desktop networks to be switched off.

It also changed owners more often than a used Corolla. eBay paid $2.6 billion in 2005, when Skype had 54 million users, and two years later took a $1.4 billion write-down on the deal. An investor group led by Silver Lake bought control in 2009. Microsoft paid $8.5 billion in cash in 2011, the largest acquisition in its history at the time, and wired Skype into Office and the ill-fated Windows Phone. Each owner made the interface a little worse, in the way only a committee can. Skype had more than 300 million monthly users in 2016 and 36 million daily users by 2023. When Covid sent everyone home, Zoom became the consumer favorite and Microsoft put its engineering behind Teams. It announced Skype’s retirement in February 2025, turned it off on May 5, and pointed everyone to Teams Free, a product that is essentially Skype with a calendar invite stapled to it. Pay-as-you-go calling didn’t come along for the ride. The acquisition that was supposed to be Microsoft’s consumer communications future ended as a migration path into a workplace collaboration app.

The Aggregator Crowd Wanted Every Network in One Window

By the early 2000s your friends were scattered across four networks, and a certain kind of person refused to run four programs to reach them.

Cerulean Studios released Trillian on July 1, 2000. Scott Werndorfer, a 21-year-old college dropout living at his parents’ house in Connecticut, put in $10,000 of savings to start the company with 24-year-old Kevin Kurtz of Florida, and the two lived on donations while they built it. It began as a free IRC client named for the character in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and soon put AIM, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo in one window, each network a different-colored sphere, contacts draggable between groups regardless of which company owned them. AOL treated it the way it had treated Microsoft. On January 28, 2002, it started blocking Trillian users. Cerulean shipped version 0.721 the next day, then 0.722, 0.723 and 0.724 over the following weeks as the blocks kept coming. That fight was the first protocol war a lot of us watched live, refreshing the Cerulean forums for the next patch.

Jupiter Media Metrix counted 344,000 Trillian users in February 2002 and 610,000 by April. Small numbers. Jupiter also reported that Trillian users consistently ranked highest in average minutes spent per month, which is the Trillian personality in a single statistic. Fewer people, more hours. A commercial Trillian Pro arrived in 2003, and at various points the thing plugged into Lotus Sametime, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise, so the same window that held your high school friends also held your boss.

The open-source edition of this person ran Gaim. Mark Spencer, a sophomore at Auburn University, wrote it as a Linux emulation of AOL Instant Messenger using the GTK+ toolkit; the earliest archived release is dated December 31, 1998, and the name stood for GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger. AOL objected, so it became lowercase gaim. AOL then trademarked “AIM” and objected again, and after a long, mostly secret legal fight, an April 2007 settlement turned Gaim into Pidgin, libgaim into libpurple, and the text-mode client into Finch. Spencer, meanwhile, couldn’t afford a phone system for the company he’d started, so he wrote Asterisk, the open-source PBX a great many phone systems still run on. The Gaim user ran Linux and brought it up. The Mac user ran Adium, built on Gaim’s library, whose dock icon was a duck that quacked at you.

Then the aggregators moved into the browser. Meebo, founded in September 2005 by three people in Palo Alto, let you sign into every network from a web page, which made it the workaround of choice for students and office workers whose networks blocked the desktop clients at the firewall. It reached around 250 million monthly users by 2011, mostly through a bar it placed on publishers’ websites. Google bought it on June 4, 2012, for about $100 million and shut down nearly all of its products on July 11, about five weeks later. Digsby, a Windows aggregator, found a different business model. In 2009 Lifehacker reported that its installer pitched six bundled offers and that the client, by default, lent your idle processor to a grid-computing broker called Plura, which resold the capacity to 80legs, a commercial web crawler. The Digsby user clicked Next six times and ended up crawling the web for somebody else’s customers.

The aggregator user had commitment issues and a spreadsheet. They kept an ICQ number, an AIM screen name, a .NET Passport and a Yahoo ID alive at once, installed skins, had opinions about GTK, and when IT blocked port 5190 they tunneled around it in a browser tab, which is how a lot of people discovered the career path known as shadow IT. They run your infrastructure now. Be nice to them.

Regulators eventually noticed the problem these people were solving. When the FCC approved the AOL–Time Warner merger in January 2001 it made instant-messaging interoperability a condition before AOL could offer advanced video messaging, with progress reports every 180 days. AOL never made AIM interoperable, and in August 2003 the FCC dropped the condition after concluding AIM was losing ground anyway. In November 2025, under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Meta announced WhatsApp’s first two interoperability partners after what it called more than three years of work with European messaging services and the European Commission. According to the Mobile Ecosystem Forum, one partner, BirdyChat, had fewer than 500 Android downloads. The other, Haiket, had a waitlist. Trillian was doing this before AOL blocked it in 2002, for free, without asking anyone.

The Ones You Weren’t Supposed to Enjoy

Somewhere in a parallel universe, IM went to work and put on a tie. Enterprise instant messaging was born when Lotus launched Sametime in 1998; Microsoft followed with Exchange Instant Messaging, then Live Communications Server, then Office Communications Server in 2007, and Reuters and Bloomberg built walled gardens for the finance crowd. For years Sametime was the leading choice among companies that had set a corporate IM standard, while AOL Instant Messenger was quietly the leading IM client actually running on office PCs. Half the company was compliant and the other half was on AIM behind a Trillian skin. The corporate IM user opens every conversation with “quick sync?” Their presence light is wired to their calendar, so the software snitches on them. The Jabber person ran their own XMPP server (Jeremie Miller announced the protocol in January 1999, tired of running a separate client for every network), federated it, and had a beard. They still do.

Before any of that, “instant messaging” at work meant the DOS and Windows NET SEND command and Novell NetWare’s SEND, which I have personally used to tell someone their lunch was in the fridge. The Messenger service behind net send existed so administrators could push notices to users, and some offices used it as a crude internal chat. Spammers found it also worked across the internet on unprotected machines, and gray pop-up boxes full of ads began appearing on desktops that didn’t even have a browser open. Microsoft disabled the service by default in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and removed it from Vista. In 2008, Washington’s attorney general sued an Arizona man, alleging he bombarded computers with those pop-ups and then sold the recipients software to block them.

And BBM. BlackBerry Messenger came preinstalled on every BlackBerry starting around 2005 and identified you by an eight-character PIN you exchanged in person, on business cards, or in email signatures. It introduced the world to “D” and “R,” delivered and read, which gave millions of people a very specific anxiety a decade before the rest of us got blue ticks. From roughly 2009 to 2012, having a BBM PIN to share was a corporate status symbol, and Indonesia and Nigeria kept it alive longer than anywhere. When it went cross-platform in 2013 it was downloaded more than five million times in its first eight hours; the consumer service was buried on May 31, 2019. BBM also had PING!!, which vibrated the other person’s phone, and which I miss more than I’m willing to admit in print.

Google deserves its own row of plots. Google Talk, better known as Gchat, was retired in June 2017 in favor of Hangouts, at a moment when Google was maintaining six separate messaging apps that mostly did the same thing. Allo appeared in September 2016 and was dead by March 2019. Wave, Buzz, Spaces and Google+ Messenger are in there too, and Hangouts eventually joined them. “Google messaging app” is less a product category than a genre of obituary.

First They Crashed Your Client. Then They Read Your Mail. Now They Own Your Phone.

I remember booters. You’d be in a Yahoo room at midnight, somebody you’d annoyed would announce that you were about to get booted, and a few seconds later Yahoo Messenger would throw a C++ runtime error and vanish, sometimes taking Windows with it. You’d reconnect, they’d do it again, and the room would watch. It felt like a prank. It was actually the consumer-friendly front end of a thirty-year story about how people break into messengers, and every chapter of that story is still running somewhere.

1994 to 2003: the protocol was the attack surface

The first generation of attacks didn’t need a vulnerability, because the products barely had a lock. In 1994 a seventeen-year-old in Pittsburgh who went by Da Chronic wrote AOHell in a pirated copy of Visual Basic. It bundled a “punter” that kicked people out of chat rooms, an IM bomber, a mail bomber, a fake credit-card generator that fooled AOL’s signup, and by January 1995 a feature that posed as AOL customer service and asked strangers for their passwords. The program’s documentation is where the word “phishing” was first written down. Thousands of copycat “progs” followed. The punter, a tool whose whole purpose was to knock a stranger offline for sport, is the booter’s grandfather.

ICQ’s protocol was, if anything, worse, and one of the people who said so was Alan Cox, of Linux kernel fame. On December 14, 1997 he posted to Bugtraq that ICQ sent your password in plaintext, used UDP with sequence numbers that started at zero every session, and would helpfully tell you which IP address to spoof, so you could fire a hundred forged messages at a stranger and land several of them as anyone you liked. He included a sniffer. A student named Seth McGann replied the same day that the client-to-client side did no authentication at all and crashed if it received anything unexpected, and by April 1998 he had published icqspoof.c, which sent a message to any user that appeared to come from any UIN, plus a flooder, on a page he called the ICQ exploitation center. Mirabilis wrote back that spoofing was fixed in ICQ98a and password encryption would come in the next release.

That was the atmosphere. Every network sent chat in the clear, and sniffers with names like ICQ Snif and MSN Sniffer would show you every message on the LAN in real time, with an ARP spoofer built in for switched networks. If you typed something private on AIM in a college dorm in 2001, assume the kid down the hall read it.

Then the bugs got serious. On January 2, 2002, Matt Conover of the group w00w00 posted a remotely exploitable buffer overflow in AIM’s handling of game requests, a TLV of type 0x2711 that anyone could send you and that no setting could block, at a time when more than 100 million people were running the client. w00w00 said they would normally ship a fix themselves but couldn’t, because reverse-engineering the AIM executable was illegal under the DMCA and the license agreement, and AOL hadn’t returned their email. AOL fixed it the way it had fought Microsoft three years earlier: server-side, by filtering the malicious packets before they reached you. Three weeks later CERT issued an advisory for the same TLV type in ICQ’s Voice, Video & Games plugin, affecting an estimated 122 million users, and AOL filtered that at the server too. Remember that AOL’s last trick against Microsoft’s Messenger in 1999 had been to exploit a buffer overflow in its own client. In that building the line between a feature, a defense and an exploit was thin.

Yahoo booters sat on top of all this. There were two kinds. The exploit kind sent one malformed YMSG header from a single throwaway account and your client died on the spot. The flood kind logged in anywhere from thirty to a few thousand “bots,” which were just Yahoo IDs created in bulk, and had all of them PM and BUZZ you at once. The trick, as one regular explained in a long forum post, was that Yahoo’s servers buffered about 128 kilobytes per user; push more than that at someone faster than their client could drain it and the server decided they’d gone idle and dropped them. That was a “silent d/c,” and it worked against any client. Booters shipped as Windows programs with names like Psycho Booter and One Bot Kill Exploit and feature lists to match: 1 to 1,000 bots, a room-wide “terror” mode, a client detector that told you whether the victim was on YahElite or Yazak before you hit them. A countermeasure market grew up alongside, hardened clients like YahElite and YMLite and a tool called Y!Tunnel whose whole pitch was being hard to boot. The forums that distributed booters also warned, correctly, that most of the downloads were trojaned or keylogged, so some of the people crashing strangers were running someone else’s malware to do it. Strip away the skins and a booter is denial-of-service as a hobby, with a GUI. That business idea never went away.

2003 to 2010: your buddy list was the delivery mechanism

Around 2005 the attackers stopped trying to crash you and started using you. IM worms hijacked the client itself: a link arrived mid-conversation from a friend, in your language, at the moment you were talking, and clicking it installed the worm and sent the same link to everyone on your list. Bropia hit MSN in January 2005, Kelvir in February (it eventually spread across MSN, AIM and Yahoo, and one variant picked its message language from the victim’s Windows registry), Opanki hit AIM in May. IMlogic, which sold IM security to enterprises and so had reason to count, said it tracked 20 IM threats in all of 2004 and 571 in the second quarter of 2005 alone. For the first nine months of the year, 62 percent targeted MSN, 31 percent AIM and ICQ, and 7 percent Yahoo. Ninety-nine percent relied on social engineering; antivirus signatures existed for 6 percent of them at the moment of first detection; by October more than 60 percent of new worms disabled desktop security software on arrival. In December IMlogic logged what it called the first “intelligent” worm, one that talked back. The SANS Institute’s Alan Paller summed up the economics at the time: an army of zombies was the equivalent of an oil well.

The phishing grew up too. In 2007 a Trojan circulated as a BitTorrent download that displayed a fake Windows Live Messenger login screen and saved what you typed to C:pas.txt. By 2009 there was a whole genre of “who blocked you” websites (msn-blocked.com, who-got-blocked.com, check-who-blocked-you.com) that asked for your MSN username and password, logged into the real servers as you, and sent fake invitations to every contact you had, which is how the next victim found the site. Trend Micro documented an email version whose subject line was “hi o_O” and whose last line insisted it was not spam. And the add-on everyone installed, Messenger Plus!, had bundled a “sponsor program” from 2003 that anti-spyware vendors knew as Lop, a browser hijacker built around a pay-per-click search portal. It was ticked to install by default, and the author warned that if you removed it with Spybot instead of his uninstaller you’d break the uninstaller. The trust that made IM work, a message from a face you knew, was the vulnerability.

Companies noticed. The first industry to grow up around messaging security wasn’t encryption. It was logging and blocking: IMlogic, Akonix and FaceTime sold gateways that archived every message for compliance and shut the ports, which is why the Meebo tab existed. The kid tunneling AIM through a browser in 2007 was routing around a security product.

2010 to 2016: the server was the weak point

When the phones took over, the client stopped being the problem and the server became one. Skype had launched on the claim that its peer-to-peer design made calls impossible to tap. Starting around 2008, according to the New York Times, a team inside Skype of never more than a dozen people ran something called Project Chess to work out how to make calls available to law enforcement; the Snowden slides show Skype joining the NSA’s PRISM program on February 6, 2011, eight months before Microsoft closed its purchase; and by 2012 Skype had moved its supernodes, the peers that route calls, off users’ machines and into Microsoft data centers. Skype’s principal architect said the move began before the acquisition and was about stability, because supernodes had caused two global outages. The Guardian reported that in July 2012 the NSA boasted a new capability had tripled the number of Skype video calls it collected. Microsoft’s transparency report for that year said it had handed over the content of zero Skype communications.

Skype also inherited the booter kid, upgraded. Because Skype connected peers directly, a modified client could resolve any Skype username to its current IP address, and by 2013 dozens of “Skype resolver” websites did exactly that, whether or not the target was in your contacts or even online. They came bundled with “booter” and “stresser” services, denial-of-service for hire, aimed mostly at online gamers and poker players, and some resolvers sold “blacklisting,” a fee to keep your own name from being looked up, which is a protection racket with a checkout page. The word had travelled straight from Yahoo chat to a paid market; Lizard Squad’s Lizard Stresser, launched at Christmas 2014 after knocking over PlayStation Network and Xbox Live as a product demo, was a booter in exactly that sense. Microsoft shipped a partial fix in May 2013 that the resolver operators worked around, and finally hid IP addresses by default in January 2016.

BBM, the messenger that sold itself on security, turned out to have one key. Consumer BBM encrypted every PIN-to-PIN message with a single global key loaded onto every handset at the factory; only BlackBerry Enterprise Server customers got their own. In April 2016 Vice Canada published court records from a Montreal mafia case showing that the RCMP had run a server in Ottawa that “simulates a mobile device,” received copies of suspects’ messages, and decrypted them with the global key. Roughly a million messages were read between 2010 and 2012. How the police got the key is redacted. An RCMP inspector testified that disclosing it would hurt BlackBerry, because working with the police isn’t a good marketing story.

And WhatsApp, in its first years, was closer to ICQ in 1997 than anyone would like to remember. In 2012 its account password was derived from your phone’s IMEI or Wi-Fi MAC address, messages travelled unencrypted, and a website could change any user’s status. When it did add encryption, Thijs Alkemade, a Utrecht student who was also the lead developer of Adium, the Mac aggregator, showed in October 2013 that it used the same RC4 key for both directions of the conversation. XOR the two ciphertext streams together and the key cancels out, leaving the two plaintexts XORed with each other, which is a puzzle a patient teenager can solve when one side is predictable. He pointed out that the Soviets made the same mistake in the 1950s and Microsoft made it in its VPN software in 1995. Anyone on your Wi-Fi could read your WhatsApp. He didn’t contact the company before publishing, because he didn’t expect it to fix anything quickly.

The fix for all of this had been sitting in a Gaim plugin for a decade. In October 2004 Nikita Borisov, Ian Goldberg and Eric Brewer presented Off-the-Record Messaging at a privacy workshop, in a paper subtitled “Why Not To Use PGP,” and shipped it as a plugin for Gaim. It gave chat forward secrecy, so a stolen key couldn’t unlock old conversations, and deniability, and its users verified key fingerprints with the four friends who had also installed it. Trillian’s SecureIM, by comparison, encrypted with 128-bit Blowfish and authenticated nobody, so it stopped a passive sniffer and no one sitting in the middle. In 2013 Trevor Perrin and Moxie Marlinspike took OTR’s Diffie–Hellman ratchet, added a symmetric ratchet modeled on Silent Circle’s protocol, and called the result the Double Ratchet. It became the core of the Signal Protocol. On April 5, 2016, Open Whisper Systems announced that WhatsApp had finished rolling it out to every client. The descendant of a plugin for a Linux AIM clone was now protecting a billion people’s messages from the server that carried them, WhatsApp’s own included.

2016 to now: the phone is the target

That moved the fight. If the wire is solid and the server can’t read anything, you attack the place where the message becomes readable, which is the phone.

In April and May 2019, NSO Group, the Israeli spyware company, exploited a buffer overflow in WhatsApp’s voice-call code. A specially crafted series of RTCP packets sent to your number installed Pegasus whether or not you answered. About 1,400 people in 51 countries were hit in two weeks, 456 of them in Mexico, and the targets included journalists, lawyers and “human rights” workers (I put “Human Rights“ in quotes because many of them are linked into terror groups like Hamas and most human rights groups are only interested in humans if they are not Israeli or Jewish). WhatsApp patched it, brought in Citizen Lab to notify the victims, and sued in October 2019. In December 2024 Judge Phyllis Hamilton ruled NSO liable, noting that Pegasus had been pushed through WhatsApp’s California servers 43 times in May 2019. In May 2025 a jury awarded $167 million in punitive damages plus $444,719 to cover the engineers’ time. In October 2025 the judge cut the punitive figure to about $4 million under proportionality rules but granted a permanent injunction barring NSO from WhatsApp, which NSO had argued would put it out of business. NSO said it welcomed the 97 percent reduction.

Apple’s turn came next. In 2021 Citizen Lab pulled an exploit off a Saudi activist’s phone that they named FORCEDENTRY: files with a .gif extension that were really PDFs carrying a malformed JBIG2 image stream, which iMessage rendered without asking, sailing past the BlastDoor sandbox Apple had built into iOS 14 specifically to stop this kind of thing. Apple patched it on September 13, 2021. In 2023 the same lab found BLASTPASS, a zero-click chain that used Wallet pass attachments against a fully patched iPhone; Apple’s Lockdown Mode, introduced the year before, blocked it. In 2025 a newer Israeli vendor, Paragon, was caught using a WhatsApp zero-click against an Italian “human rights activist” and an iMessage zero-click delivered through an iCloud link against European journalists, including Ciro Pellegrino of Fanpage.it; Apple had quietly patched the bug in February and only credited it in June. And in August 2025 WhatsApp issued an emergency fix for a flaw in how it authorized linked-device synchronization messages, chained with an Apple image-parsing bug and used against journalists and “human rights” defenders. Nobody clicked anything in any of these.

Linked devices turn out to be the soft spot of the encrypted era. In February 2025 Google’s threat intelligence group reported Russian-aligned operators targeting Signal users with QR codes dressed up as group invites, security alerts or Signal’s own pairing instructions. Scan one and your account is linked to a device the attacker controls, and every future message is delivered to both of you. A linked device is a wiretap with a green checkmark, and you install it yourself.

The other pressure comes from people who already have the phone. In December 2020 Cellebrite, whose forensic kits police use to pull data off seized handsets, claimed it had “cracked” Signal. It had opened Signal on an unlocked phone and read the messages, which anyone can do. Four months later Moxie Marlinspike posted that a Cellebrite kit had fallen off a truck in front of him, a “truly unbelievable coincidence,” and that its software shipped FFmpeg libraries years out of date and lacked standard exploit mitigations, so a specially formatted file on a scanned phone could run code on the examiner’s Windows machine and alter every report it had ever produced or ever would. His demo popped a window reading “MESS WITH THE BEST, DIE LIKE THE REST.” He offered to share details if Cellebrite would disclose the exploits it uses to break into phones, and mentioned that future versions of Signal might start fetching some aesthetically pleasing files into app storage. And Signalgate, the most famous messenger failure of the decade, involved no bug at all. It gets its own section below.

So here’s the arc. In 1997 a kid with a dial-up account could crash a stranger’s client from a dorm room with a hundred forged UDP packets. In 2025 reading one person’s messages takes a government customer, a zero-day chain and a vendor with a legal department, and when it’s discovered there’s a lawsuit. That is real progress, and the people who built the Signal Protocol deserve most of the credit for it. But look at what moved. The target was the wire, then the client, then the server, then the phone, and now, more often than anything else, the person holding it. The booter kid’s business model, knocking someone offline for a fee, never died either. It grew a payment portal.

A Private Messenger Is Mostly a Server That Refuses to Know Things

So what does a private messenger look like from the inside, after all that? I shipped one this year. WhiteStar Messenger runs on ASP.NET Core and .NET 10, with SignalR over a Redis backplane, SQL Server for accounts and public key material, a vanilla JavaScript web client, and a .NET MAUI app for Windows and Android. The Signal Protocol lives in its own .NET library that has no idea a server exists. You register with a username. A phone number appears nowhere in the flow.

Most of the engineering is teaching the server not to know things. It routes an envelope with a sender, a recipient, a timestamp and an encrypted payload it has no way to open. Messages for offline users wait in Redis for up to 24 hours and are deleted the moment the client acknowledges them. One-time pre-keys go up in batches of a hundred, and each is deleted as soon as someone fetches it. Anyone who takes the server gets metadata: who talked to whom, when, and how much. I put that in the threat model because it’s true. This design doesn’t hide it, and a vendor who never mentions the equivalent in its own product is hoping you won’t ask.

Presence, the thing that made AIM feel alive, turns out to be a Redis key with a 61-second expiry, refreshed by a client heartbeat every 50 seconds. When the key lapses, a background service that checks every ten seconds tells your contacts you’re gone. That’s the entire technology behind the door creak. The incoming-call ring is two sine waves synthesized in the browser at 440 and 480 hertz, the same pair the North American phone network uses for ringback. Close the Windows app and it drops into the system tray and stays connected, which is exactly where AIM, MSN and Yahoo lived in 2003.

None of this is exotic. The companies that killed the old messengers had the technology to keep them fun. They didn’t have a way to bill for it.

WhatsApp Won by Being Boring

In June 2009, Jan Koum posted to the ejabberd mailing list that he’d installed the open-source Jabber server that day and gotten it working with Adium and iChat. WhatsApp was built on a heavily modified version of that server and never federated with anybody. That same year Brian Acton was turned down for jobs at Twitter and then Facebook; his tweet after the second rejection began “Facebook turned me down.” In 2014 Facebook agreed to pay $19 billion for his company.

The founders were known for one position. In a 2012 blog post titled “Why we don’t sell ads,” Koum wrote that when advertising is involved, “you the user are the product,” and a note from Acton taped to Koum’s desk read “No Ads! No Games! No Gimmicks!” Acton left Facebook in late 2017, walking away from roughly $850 million in unvested stock. He put $50 million into the new Signal Foundation in February 2018, and in March he tweeted “It is time. #deletefacebook.” As recently as September 2023, WhatsApp head Will Cathcart called reports of ad plans false. On June 16, 2025, Meta announced ads in WhatsApp’s Updates tab, which it said 1.5 billion people use every day.

The WhatsApp user is the least colorful person in this story and by far the most numerous. Meta said on its Q1 2025 earnings call that the app had passed three billion monthly users, with more than two billion opening it daily. The product is excellent at being a utility with a phone number for a name, and its culture is the family group chat, which you cannot leave without it becoming an event. In 2018 The Wall Street Journal reported that good-morning images, the sunrises and flowers forwarded by the millions before 8 a.m., were among the main reasons phones in India kept running out of space, and a Western Digital survey found one in three Indian smartphone users ran out of storage every day. Google spent months building a feature into its Files Go app to find and delete the images. Early versions kept flagging photos of children wearing T-shirts with words on them.

Look at what’s left of presence. Your status is “Hey there! I am using WhatsApp,” which is what a hostage says. The little green flower became a surveillance regime: last seen, two blue ticks, “typing…”. We didn’t get mystery; we got evidence. On AIM someone’s silence could mean anything. On WhatsApp it means they read it at 4:12 p.m. and made a decision. Nobody can nudge you. Nobody appears offline; you leave people on read, which is the same behavior with none of the craft. And the only stranger who messages you is a business account with a green checkmark.

In 2025 the family chat got a new member. As Meta AI rolled out across Europe that spring, WhatsApp users found a glowing circle on the chats screen that couldn’t be switched off, and WhatsApp told the BBC that “giving people these options is a good thing.” On May 28, 2025, Mark Zuckerberg told shareholders Meta AI had reached a billion monthly active users across Meta’s apps. He didn’t say how many of them had gone looking for it. The assistant sits in the search bars of apps that billions of people open for other reasons.

The username reservations came a year later. They hide your number from new contacts. You still need a phone number to have an account.

Signal Is Only as Private as the Person Holding the Phone

Signal is what careful people use when a conversation matters, and it has earned that. Meredith Whittaker, who runs the foundation behind it, put its monthly users between 70 and 100 million in April 2025. It also couldn’t connect you with anyone without exposing your phone number until February 2024, when it added usernames, and it still requires a number to register. Its entire personality is discretion. You use it for the conversations you’d rather not have subpoenaed, and you never once feel the urge to change your name to a lyric.

The math has never been the weak point. On March 11, 2025, Jeffrey Goldberg, editor in chief of The Atlantic, accepted a Signal connection request from national security adviser Mike Waltz and soon found himself in a group called “Houthi PC small group,” administered by Waltz, where senior officials discussed strikes in Yemen. Waltz later said he had built the group himself. The encryption performed flawlessly. It delivered every message to the journalist.

At an April 30 cabinet meeting, a Reuters photographer caught Waltz’s phone showing an app that asked him to verify his “TM SGNL PIN.” TM SGNL was TeleMessage’s modified Signal, sold to government agencies so they could archive messages for records compliance. Security engineer Micah Lee’s analysis found that TeleMessage’s archive server received chat logs in plaintext. Within days, 404 Media reported that a hacker had broken in, and TeleMessage suspended all of its services. Signal told Reuters it “cannot guarantee the privacy or security properties of unofficial versions of Signal.”

The Signal user is the colleague who says “let’s move this to Signal” and means it. The failure mode was never the cryptography. It’s whoever holds the phone, and whatever else is installed on it.

Nobody Figured Out How to Bill for the Fun

In 2001 a startup called ActiveBuddy put a bot named SmarterChild on AIM. It looked up the weather, sports scores and stock quotes, remembered who you were when you came back, and gave as good as it got. It spread to MSN and Yahoo and collected, by most accounts, 30 million buddies. ActiveBuddy struggled to make money from it. Microsoft bought the company, renamed Colloquis by then, in October 2006. The press release talked about automated customer-service agents for Xbox and never mentioned SmarterChild, which Microsoft shut down. Microsoft made its first $1 billion investment in OpenAI in 2019, and by October 2024 its filings put total funding commitments at $13 billion.

I build conversational agents for a living, including a shopping assistant for ShopSnap storefronts and a planning agent for a Las Vegas wedding chapel, so I say this with some affection: SmarterChild had the one thing no model upgrade supplies. People added it to their buddy lists themselves. Meta AI arrived as a circle nobody asked for, and a billion monthly users is the number a company gets to announce when the button comes preinstalled.

The old messengers were fun because nobody had worked out how to bill for fun yet. Four networks fought over the same users, so every client shipped something ridiculous to hold onto them. Your identity was a name you invented at fourteen. The strangers were real, which was the best and the worst thing about Yahoo. And the protocols were open enough, or broken enough, that a sophomore in Alabama and two guys in Connecticut could plug into all of them at once.

Today the networks have consolidated, your identity is a SIM card, the strangers are advertisers in the Updates tab, and the newest contact on the list is an assistant nobody added. We traded a dozen weird little tribes for one very good utility, and nobody has ever missed their water company.

ICQ gave you a number. WhatsApp asked for yours.
